SciVal Spotlight: A tool for measuring research performance!

author June 16th, 2010 by Daniel Gunnarsson

Taken from their website…

Based on co-citation analysis and an innovative visualization technique, SciVal Spotlight customizes unique graphical views of an institution’s research performance indicating growing areas of multidisciplinary strength and identifying key competitors and potential collaborators, which allows research managers to make objective and strategic evaluation and planning decisions throughout the year. Rather than ranking broad subject areas, SciVal Spotlight creates a map upon the Wheel of Science that illustrates for which specific research topics your institution has a Distinctive Competency, revealing research strengths that reference literature from a single disciple as well as those that are highly interdisciplinary.

Do you consider this to be interesting questions…
- How can we best allocate limited internal funding?
- How do we compare to competitors in our areas of strength?
- Are we overlooking opportunities?
- Who are our potential collaborators?
Then maybe SciVal Spotlight could be the answer!

SciVal Spotlight uses Scopus as an underlying data source. With over 16,000 peer-reviewed journals, Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of research literature. Jönköping University Library have access to Scopus!

If there is an extensive interest  for this product at Jönköping University, we can manage a demonstration through the University Library. Send us an e-mail to show interest.

Meanwhile take a look at this video and the website.

Now you can make presentations Hans Rosling style!

author May 7th, 2010 by Daniel Gunnarsson

With Google Public Data Explorer you can take data from many different datasets (with even more subsets, for example World Bank - WDI) and make a presentation just like Hans Rosling. Could be very interesting for students to see and then have as an assignment to search for theories, research and empirical facts to explain how, when and why or for students themselves to use in their presentations.

This is an example I have made for my subject guide The Business and Economics Librarian about GDP.

bX helps you find articles that others found interesting

author February 5th, 2010 by Mattias Lorentzi

Probably you are familiar with Amazon’s recommender service: “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought”.

bX does kind of the same thing, but with library resources. Here is an example.

Let’s say you want articles on social websites. In Google Scholar you find this.

bx_2

Click on the e-JULIA link and you will get the e-JULIA window.

bx_3

At the bottom you see bX, the recommender service. It will show up only if there are recommendations available. You get three recommended articles for a start. If you click on the e-JULIA icon next to any of the articles, you can have a look at recommendations also for this article. In this way, you can browse and find articles that others have found useful.

Here is more information about bX.

author February 3rd, 2010 by Daniel Gunnarsson

The SCImago Journal & Country Rank is a portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus® database. These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains.

This platform takes its name from the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator, developed by SCImago from the widely known algorithm Google PageRank™. This indicator shows the visibility of the journals contained in the Scopus® database from 1996.

This is really a great and userfriendly site. Please contac us at the University Library for a demonstration.
